Hideaways Beach

Day 5 we headed down to Hideaways Beach, right underneath the Princeville Hotel. It is a little bit of a hike down some scary slippery stairs with railings that look like they could blow over in a strong gust, but we made it down, and there was only one other person there! He was a using an underwater metal detector in the water, and we were stoked to basicall have the place to ourselves. We snorkeled for awhile, saw another fantastic sea turtle, and then curled up under some palms for a little reading. Kevin went exploring in the cliffs above us, trying to get a coconut down. He threw many things up there, but never quite made contact. Oh well, it was a good effort!
That afternoon, we headed down to Kapa'a for a crafts fair and some lunch. We didn't think much of the crafts fair. There was a lot of the same stuff at every vendor, and most of it wasn't even made in Hawaii. We were hoping for something a little more local, but came away disappointed. However, we also found a great place for lunch, Scotty's Beachside BBQ. This is actually owned by the guy who wrote our favorite guide book, the Ultimate Guide to Kauai. It was great, and had great views!

It was a great day! By the way, the guy with the metal detector found a men's gold wedding band. A pretty big find! He said it would make a good dent in paying for the detector itself. So remember, when in Hawaii, do not take your rings snorkeling!
