Marché

Last night we went out with Kevin's parents and younger brother to belatedly celebrate his 30th birthday (yes he will be 31 next month!) and also see Susan and Mark before they leave for a month long adventure in South America!

This restaurant is run by the famed chef of Seattle's Canlis, so we knew we were in for a treat!

The menu selection is small, but with excellent variety, and the space is unique, making use of a narrow building without feeling cramped at all.

The meal began with complimentary salmon rillette on a chip; a delightfully fatty little morsel which set the tone for the evening.

We shared an appetizer of chicken liver pâté, which was a huge portion not easily finished by a group of 5! There were also hot bread buns that just melted in my mouth.

For the main course, the choice was easy for me: pork loin with a pork rillette raviolo, with grilled Brussels sprouts and tomatoes. Others struggled with their choices, but eventually we ended with 2 orders of the duck, and 2 orders of the Mediterranean mussels. Everything was cooked to perfection, and beautifully presented. The wait staff was made up of many familiar faces; a neighbor of the Shaffers, a neighbor of mine from childhood, and a man I was in theater with in high school, so we had a nice time catching up while we ate!

We finished off the meal with a pine nut tart with orange sorbet, and a flourless chocolate hazelnut torte. They were each amazing and delightful!

Overall, I would highly recommend checking this place out! There wasn't a single disappointing portion! Just watch out for the crazy dreams as a result of so many rich and delicious foods!

Broccoli Curry Udon

Mmmmmm, now that was a goooooooooood dinner! I have been slightly obsessed with udon noodles of late, and was excited to find this recipe, and that broccoli was on sale at Central Market! I did something I try not to do too often, which was to adapt the recipe the first time I made it, but I knew what I wanted tonight.

I adapted this from a recipe on Post Punk Kitchen. Mostly I just added more veggies and a lot more noodles since we wanted to eat this for a couple of days.  It makes 4-6 servings.

Broccoli Curry Udon:
32 oz fresh udon noodles
Olive or canola oil for sauteeing
1 pound broccoli florettes (6 cups)
Medium red onion, thinly sliced

1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
4-6 mushrooms, sliced thickly
2 teaspoons fresh minced ginger
3 cloves garlic, minced
Big pinch red pepper flakes
2 cups chicken or vegetable broth mixed with 3 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 Tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 cup light coconut milk

Bring 6 quarts water to boil in a large pot, add noodles and cook for 3-4 minutes, drained and rinse under cold water.  Set aside.

In a large skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of oil, add broccoli and a little water, cover, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes.  Remove lid, add bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms, and cook until veggies are tender but still crisp, about 3 more minutes.  Remove to a large bowl.

In the same skillet, add garlic and ginger to a small amount of oil, stirring until fragrant, about 1 minute.  Add red pepper flakes, then the broth and cornstarch mixture, curry powder, and soy sauce. Bring to a boil and stir until the sauce has thickened a little. Add coconut milk and heat through.

Add the noodles back into the sauce, and stir until coated and the noodles are heated back through, then add the veggies back and stir until well combined.  Serve in large pasta bowls, top with sesame seeds and sambal.

Note, in the future I will make more sauce for this amount of noodles, but it was rather tasty as is! I just like a lot of sauce!  Yum yum!

The Gastronomy of Marriage

I just finished reading a food writings book called The Gastronomy of Marriage by Michelle Maisto. A young New Yorker recently engaged offers to take on the cooking in the house as her fiance takes on more work to pay for their upcoming wedding. It's a sweet book, and an interesting look into how another couple deals with the sometimes dreaded, sometimes welcomed question, "What's for dinner?"

Kevin and I have been together since we were 18, and as such, essentially learned how to cook together, so I think that has made a tremendous impact on how we function as a couple when dealing with the nightly chore of dinner. We both enjoy cooking a lot, but neither one of us likes to do it every night, and we both cherish and look forward to nights we don't have to cook. A friend recently asked us if we always eat the same thing for dinner as the other one. Almost to a night, we eat our dinner together, made by one or both of us. It seemed such an odd question at the time, of course we eat the same thing, we're a family! I don't want to cook two different meals! But in Maisto's book, she happens to be a vegetarian, and Rich is a meat eater. They have very different ideas about what a dinner should look like, owing greatly to the fact that she was raised in a very Italian family, while his family is Chinese. She likes heavier, rich food, while he is drawn to clean, light fare, things that are as close to what they look like fresh as cooked. Therefore, she often ends up making two meals. That would drive me crazy!

They also shop spur of the moment, seemingly every day. She attributes this to living in NYC, where it's so easy to just grab something from a bodega or a deli on the way home from work. We shop once a week. All our meals for the week are planned out, we go with a shopping list in hand, and rarely do we make something else instead. It's rigid, but it also builds in a flexibility to the rest of our week because instead of trying to think of something to make every night, we have it all planned out and can spend that time playing games, hanging out with friends, reading, and relaxing!

We are big leftovers people. Unless we make fish, we eat everything for at least two dinners. This means we cook about 3 times a week, and usually will eat out once a week. It's a nice little schedule for us, though it does take the spontaneity out of cooking. I found myself envying Maisto's spur of the moment, "what's in the cupboard to throw together" approach. As I've mentioned, my favorite kind of cooking is without a real recipe, just throwing together a big mish mash of whatever is on hand. Or nights when all I really want is a bowl of rice with some cheese melted in, or a big sandwich. Those are rare nights in our household, which is perhaps why when they do happen, I love them so much!

But if we didn't plan so well, then I wouldn't probably have dinners like this:
Japanese Beef and Soba Noodles

As a general rule, I don't cook meat. It's not that I don't love it, but I absolutely abhor touching raw meat. It makes me squeamish! I've gotten better about it, but if I can find a veggie meal that will work for my dinners, I will make that over something that means touching meat. But I've been craving some kind of steak salad, and we had steak in the freezer.

Since Kevin is working 10 hour days on his latest rotation, I offered to cook more during the week if he does more on the weekend. Somewhat similar to Maisto's situation. :) But while she sort of rails against putting herself in a traditionally female role, and struggles throughout feeling like she is letting herself down by taking on the cooking, I don't have the same issues with feeling like I'm not being a "good" feminist. I'm blessed to have a husband who is more than willing to take on his share (let's be honest, more than his share) of the household tasks. I'm messy. I'm pretty lazy. And I hate cleaning. But cooking, cooking is something I can usually get behind! Maisto comes to essentially the same conclusion at the end of the book, when Rich points out that despite her vehement protests not to be the family cook, she jumps into the kitchen at every opportunity. Overall, I really enjoyed this little book, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a peek into someone else's nightly ritual of dinner. She has some funny moments about her issues with faith, or moreover that Rich isn't as "good" of a Christian as her family would like him to be, but other than I found her charming and sweet, and a nice change of pace from the thriller of a read that Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire were!

It's funny, I didn't even really know about the genre of food writings until fairly recently, and I find myself extremely drawn to them now. Perhaps partly because I have developed a healthier relationship with food in the last couple years, not just being a snacker at every turn, but really savoring the meals we prepare and being better about what I put in my body. I enjoy food in a way I never had before, and I think that has led to me wanting to read about others joy in cooking and eating. Now I'm gonna go eat some leftover steak salad and noodles! Bon appetit!

A Holiday Feast

For Valentines Day, Kevin wanted to make me a Chinese New Year Feast to celebrate, and I do not turn down husband-made food. My man can cook! :) He wanted everything to be a surprise, so he went off shopping on his own, and came back with vast quantities of Chinese ingredients, and set to work at 10am! First on the menu were pork pot stickers, or Jiaozi, which are said to resemble gold nuggets and bring wealth in the new year! Let me tell you, once you have had homemade potstickers, the frozen ones from Costco just won't cut it anymore! Luckily, he made lots, so we have some frozen for when my next pot sticker craving strikes!

Pork+ginger+garlic+green onions=YUM!

What a pro! Perfectly filled!

Yeah, you can start drooling anytime now!

The final one was a fatty, needed to be photoed!
He served these as appetizers before he got down to the business of dinner cooking! I just kept "mmmmmm, mmmmmm"ing the entire time I was eating them!

On the menu for dinner was Chow Fun, a beef, bell pepper, and noodle pile of deliciousness! It is traditional to eat noodles for the new year, and one is supposed to eat each noodle without breaking it. This is difficult for the chopstick-impaired! I couldn't believe how good this tasted, and I have been thoroughly enjoying leftovers! We also had Jiangcai, which were amazing sauteed bok choy and broccoli veggies in oyster sauce.

For dessert, he made nian gao, which was...interesting. It wasn't the best thing on the menu, but it satisfied the need for dessert nonetheless! :) Overall, a totally amazing New Year/Valnetines celebration! Thank you for spoiling me, Kevin! :)

Yesterday, Kevin had the day off to celebrate some presidents or something, so he took some gorgeous photos in the yard while the sun was shining! Everything is so pretty! So excited to continue seeing what comes up in the yard!
Camellia I mean azalea, thanks Susan!

Vinca

A much better photo of the pink thing!

Crocus

Pussywillow!

The crocuses just keep coming!

In addition to viewing the Olympics, I'm also participating in them. The Knitting Olympics that is! I know, I'm such a nerd! :) Basically, the idea is to knit something that will be challenging to complete between the lighting and extinguishing of the Olympic torch. I don't have the greatest sense of how much I can knit when I set my mind to it, but I think I chose a good project. I can't show exactly what I'm making, because it's a present for my baby niece coming in July (squeeeeeeal, a girl!!!!!) but here's a sneak peek at it! It's coming along quite nicely, and I have full faith that I will be able to finish before the torch is extinguished at the end of the Vancouver Games.

Graduation enchiladas!

A very exciting weekend ahead of us. Tomorrow morning, Kevin will be graduating from UW! He has worked really hard the last couple of years, and will be graduating at the top of his class in the Civil Engineering department. I am so proud of him for going back to school and working towards a degree that he is excited about, and I can't wait to whoop and holler when his name is called tomorrow!
My mom sent this sweet basket of goodies over to celebrate!

Also very exciting, Kevin accepted a position as a hydraulic engineer today! He has been looking for a few months, and found a job that looks like it will be a perfect fit for him! We are feeling very excited and relieve and are ready to celebrate his successes! Tomorrow evening we will be gathering up our families on the island to party down!

In celebration, yesterday we decided to make chicken enchiladas, one of Kevin's favorite meals. (Mine, too!) Here is how we do it:

Buy a whole chicken, and roast it. Carve it, then when it has cool, pick the dark meat and shred into small pieces.
Dice a red onion finely. Grate 10 ounces of cheddar cheese.
Spread 1/3 of a can of green enchilada sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch pan. Soften 12 corn tortillas in a little bit of oil in a skillet, being careful not to fry them! Do these one at a time, and fill and roll with cheese, meat, and onion.
Spread rest of enchilada sauce over the top, then scatter any remaining cheese, chicken, and onion mixture on top. Finally, top with a bunch of chopped cilantro. Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees.
Delicious!

This afternoon, we headed up to the Phinney Farmers Market and got some yummy cherries and romaine lettuce! Tonight, we are going out for a celebratory drink somewhere, and then tomorrow we party!

Life is Good: A Weekend in Photos

What a great weekend! Friday, we went to the Mariners game versus Oakland for Turn Back the Clock Night. All the way back to 1939, when we had the Seattle Rainiers and the Oakland Oaks. We got great hats, and the whole game had an old timey feel to it. They had only organ music, and didn't do any of the obnoxious crowd rousing sounds. It seemed like people were much louder on their own without the prompting. Our friends Danielle, Robin, Laura, and a couple of Laura's friends from Vancouver joined us, and even though the Mariners lost, we all had a great time!

Danielle and I show off our Rainiers caps!

Robin and Kevin mug for the camera

Sadly, our rally caps didn't help the M's out, but we never lost our sense of humor!

Today, Danielle and I decided we needed to work off some of the kettle corn and peanuts we ate at the game, and headed off to do the Lake Union trail. We met at South Lake Union, and off we went! We stopped off in Fremont to check out the Fremont Sunday Market, where I picked up a couple birthday presents for some little men in my life, and then continued on around the loop, having a little snack near the houseboats on the east side of the lake. We had a really nice time, and the weather could not have been better! It was sunny the whole time, with a nice breeze. We both will sleep well tonight, about 10 miles logged!

Then this evening, Matthew and Terri invited us over for Indian Curry and homemade naan! What could be a better way to end a great weekend than great food and visiting with family? Matthew has been baking bread a lot lately, with great success, and decided to try his hand at naan, and boy am I glad he did! It was utterly fantastic! Terri made the curry, and Kevin and I loooooooved it! We now have their slow cooker on loan so we can make some ourselves! Terri is becoming quite to good little cook, and Kevin and I will never turn down an offer of dinner at their place! :) Thanks for having us over!

Naan!

Jackson of course was the center of my attention. He has officially learned the sign for dog, and even says "dah" when Sasha is around him. He always is definitely saying Nate, and he says "yeah!" a lot. He has improved his walking a ton since we saw him two weeks ago, he's practically running now! And he doesn't need to hold onto anything to get up, he's figured out the tripod method.
Always wants to play the guitar!

Jackson loves Nate, he just follows him around the house everywhere. Nate is playing a little peek-a-boo from the deck here, and Jackson loved it!

Nate and Terri got to see the Walking with Dinosaurs at the Key Arena last night, and Nate was super excited to show off pictures they took. He's turning 10 next Monday! I can't believe how quickly he's growing up! All in all, we had an awesome weekend, hopefully it extends into the week! We have a busy one, with another M's game tomorrow!
